Hello everyone! I'm new to the board. I just found you today via Serena Welsh (thank you so much)! Like everyone else, I was going to the other site.

Anyway, here's my story...

I just found out I was pregnant 4 weeks ago, an "oops", but happy and scared since I was told that I shouldn't have anymore children. I was 20 weeks this past Friday!

My husband and I had struggled with infertility and abnormal menstrual cycles since we were married, so I never figured I was pregnant when I was. I was 16 weeks along when we first found out, so I was concerned because of the medication I was on during those 16 weeks. As soon as we found out, my husband, Tony called my cardiologist and they took me off of Aldactone and Lisinopril. We had an immediate US with my HR OB scheduled the Friday after finding out, and that's when we found out we were 16 weeks. We couldn't believe it! We could literally count the 2 times we had intercourse without protection in 21 months, and 1 was in October. With the infertility problems, we never thought we could get pregnant again, anyway!

Anyway, we saw the cardiologist the following week, and he pretty much said that we need to make a decision whether or not we were going to keep the baby because we were so far along, and that most likely I'll get PPCM again. When I got diagnosed last time, it was so acute that I had to have an emergency C-section, and was intubated and had 3 central lines. My EF was 10%. When I left the hospital, it was 20%. 6 months later, it was the same, but I was feeling physically fine. I was very sad when we were told not to have anymore children. When we saw my HR OB the next day, she pretty much made our decision. We were keeping the baby, with a scheduled C-section between 32 and 36 weeks. Kyla my almost 2 year old was 34 weeks, but you can't tell today that she was a premie.

Around Christmas time, I had experienced many heart palpitations that I knew it wasn't normal, so when I saw my cardiologist, they put me on an event monitor to record every palpitation. I had an ECHO done (approx. 1 year after my last) and my EF rose to 55%! We were ecstatic! Then I had some type of "stomach" thing for 5 days with cramps and loose stool. I saw my family doc, and while I was there decided to do a pregnancy test b/c my last cycle was in October, but I wasn't worried, because my previous cycle was in August, and the one before that was in April, but I figure to check, incase I had to get my cycle "restarted" with prometrium. It was a shock to find out that we were pregnant! I was terrified!

When we saw the cardiologist about the pregnancy, he was also surprised at the rise in EF, that he had my ECHO reread by another MD, who concurred with the original results. I recently had another ECHO done last week and there is no change, so my cardiologist was really pleased, so... so far, so good.

On top of the PPCM, I also have Type 2 Diabetes,, so I'm being monitored for that as well. I'm seeing my cardiologist 1x a month so far with an ECHO at each visit. My OB every 2-3 weeks.

Finding this site gives me so much hope, especially when I read about subsequent pregnancies. I can't imagine leaving my husband and beautiful daughter.

Anyway, I'm sorry this is so long, but I was so happy to find individuals with my condition who are also pregnant, and are doing so well.

I too am going to have a scheduled C-Section- between 34-36 weeks, and we are praying that my pregnancy goes well, and our new baby boy, Anthony, is healthy. Thank you for taking the time out to read about me. It's great to be able to share my experience! :)

Hi Gerie.
I'm so glad you found us. This board is full of the most wonderful women I've ever "met."
You are definately not alone. Alot of women here have had oops pregnancies, and many have had more babies on purpose. I know it's got to be stressful, but with your EF still so high, you have to know you're going to be just fine.

Take some time to read our bios, and you'll find that most of our stories aren't so different from yours (except for the finding out at 16 weeks part)!

PS
Congrats on the new baby boy!

Congrats on your pregnancy! I'm glad you found us. Several women on the board have been in a similar position to yours.

Hope all continues to go well for you, and hope you'll continue to hang around here!

Sorry I sent ya to the other board. I didn't know about this new one until I started reading the other board more.

Gerie first emailed me because she had found the ppcmsupport board. I am SO glad that I put my email in my bio.

Congratulations on your pregnancy Gerie! I was 14 1/2 months post diagnosis when I got pregnant post PPCM. I've lived 11 years with this and my heart IS responding!!! (It was stable {holding at EF of 40%} after my I had my last baby until I stopped taking my meds... thought I was superwoman. Dropped down to as low as 20 back in 2001, but finally returned to 35-40% when I lost a bunch of weight.)

Anyway, SO glad you found you are not alone!!! Good luck on this pregnancy! Tummy pats!!!

Gerie,
Congrats! I am sure everything will be just fine.
I am also pregnant with my post ppcm baby and am now 31 weeks along.
I will be having a C-section at 38 weeks on 4/26.
When I was dx I was also in servere heart failure and my ef was between 10-15%. I recovered very quickly but it took me 2.5 years to convince my Doctors to support me in another pg.
So far my EF has stayed at 65% throughout the pg and I have had no symptoms!
This board is great and you will find a lot of support here!
I wish you the best and can't wait to hear more updates in the future!

Gerie,

YAY...I'm so happy for you! I know you're scared, I would be too! You're so far along, you really don't have that much more to go! WOW..what a shock that must have been! I guess some things are just meant to be!

Take good care of yourself and keep us posted! We'll all be praying for a safe and happy delivery for Mom and baby!

Love,
Kari

I am glad you found us, and congrats on your pregnancy! It sounds like it was something that was meant to be. It also sounds like your doctors are all keeping on top of everything, which is a very good thing. Take care of yourself and think positive! :)

Hello all! I guess I should clarify my due date. I am actually due 7/22/05, but my OB would like to schedule a C-section between 34-38 weeks, which would put me between June 10-July 8. The funny thing is, my brother's wife is also pregnant, but she found out at 5 weeks, and her due date is June 10! We thought that was funny, b/c that's the earliest we would deliver! :D

So far, I'm feeling great. I haven't had to use the event monitor the cardiologist had put me on in case of palpitations, increased heart rate, etc. I had a ton of frequent heart palpitations at the end of December and January, but nothing frequent since then. I had palpitations throughout my first pregnancy, but it was pretty much the last 4 months. Now, it happens approximately 1-2x a week. Did or does anyone experience the same thing? Just wondering. :)

Well, that's it for now! This board is great!!!!

Geri, Welcome and congrats. My story is different from many of the other ladies here as I was diagnosed 12 weeks into my third pregnancy. My case histories for my other pregnancies showed that I probably had PPCM with each of them, but went undiagnosed.

With my third pregnancy I had palpitations for the last 4 months as well. I was also symptomatic with my palps with dizziness, sweats, nausea, ect. My heart rate was also going up to 196 with the palps. Granted my ef throughout this pregnancy was 43%. I ended up delivering at 36-37 weeks.

Hi, I would like to WELCOME you to this wonderful site of woman. Congratulations on your pregnancy and I am sure everything will be fine or else God would not have given you such a miracle after so long of trying through infertility. Please keep us posted on the progress of your pregnancy.

To answer your question about feeling the palps while pregnant - that was my only symptom that I noticed. The shortness of breath had become a way of life for me and only aggrivated those around me. The palps were almost continuous, and caused my front 4 bottom teeth to hurt (not one of my doctors will agree that the teeth hurting and the palps were related).
As it turns out, those "palps" were runs of v-tach and I'm very very lucky that they caught it when they did.
I have palps all the time now, too, and have had to wear the event monitors on several occasions. All they ever catch these days are PVCs and PACs, so clearly, things have improved.
Keep us posted on your appointments and when they decide to do your c-section, so we can send some healing vibes.
Those vibes from these women got me through!

I wish you so much luck and courage. It can be done, think positively. I had my first child in 1988 and had ppcm but was never diagnosed properly, and recovered with no meds, I had my second child in 2001 and was diagnosed and pulled through like a trooper. I am on no meds now and ef is at 55%. You can do it to I am pulling for you! Take care and God Bless.

Hi Gerie...my husband is stationed at NAS Oceana. I spent 6-8 weeks in VA Beach while recovering before coming home to my three kids. Had to be near the naval hospital at Portsmouth. Anyway, so we are close. Cool. Ever need anything once I am back up there would be glad to assist. I am praying, too. I try to remember to lift up all PPCMers regardless of situation often. I am happy for you and yours. Take it easy and don't live in fear. You seem great. Glad you found the site. Oh, I am in Staunton, VA, right now with my inlaws who are helping me as I recover. Three kids keep me busy and I need some help. Don't know what my EF is now but I know I am improving. Anyway, God bless!!! My next echo is April 4th.

Sincerely,
Alison
