I have had a couple. Sometimes they will give you a vallium or other sedative to help you relax. Mine gave me a miniscule dose that had the other docs rolling their eyes behind his back. It really isn't too bad, but then I have also had a number of upper GI scopes which were much worse. The NG tube I had inserted while awake was also way worse then the TEE.

Tara, it's a trans esophegeal echo. Don't take my word on the spelling. I am certain it is wrong.

They do the echo from inside.

Hi Tish...

I've never had one, but my Mom just had one last week. That's the best description I've heard is an echo from inside.

They gave my Mom a little sedative and she really doesn't remember much about it. She'll be having another one in the next couple of weeks to see if the clot in her heart is changing.

Good luck....you'll do fine.

I had one Tish
I do not remember what drug they gave me but i do not remember the test at all. I have remember vagly gaging when they put it in and the next thing i remember is being told it was over and getting wheeled back to my hospital room. They did make me drink a shot of something to coat my throat and that was AWFUL but it is quick.

I was not allowed to east anything before the test.

Usually they make you gargle with xylocaine to freeze your throat. They will then sometimes spray xylocaine to freeze your gag reflex if it wasn't frozen from the initial gargle.

Ther is a thing called viscious (sp?) lidocaine, and basically looks like vasoline and has lidocaine in it. It is used sometimes for reflux, with MOM and something green and nasty!

they gave me liquid novacaine to numb my throat and darvocet in my IV to put me to sleep. i don't remember any of it. i was amazed when they woke me to tell me it was over. the doctors told me the results but i don't remember even talking to him. my mom had to tell me later that evening the results.

Why are you getting this done instead of a standard echo? Boy am I confused.

Megan, they are doing this bc I've always had problems running. when they were talking to me about doing a stress test I told them I've never been able to run. We talke a little further and he said I had symptoms of having a hole in my heart (where one of the valves that is supposed to close off when you're born doesn't close). But the valve is so small the only way to see is by a TEE. So he wants to check for that. It can make it hard to breathe when running etc bc the oxygenated blood mixes with deoxygenated blood, so you're body can't take the extreme stress like most peoples. So that's what he's looking for and why he's doing the TEE :)

OK Ladies, keep me in your thoughts and prayers tonight and in the morning. I'm nervous about swallowing this tube :) And more than that, I don't know what I'm going to do not being able to talk during an echo...usually I ask a million questions :) I'll update ASAP....pray for no hole in the heart and no drop in EF!!!

Of course I'll be prayin for ya! What were your symptoms? I have never been able to run but I just figured it was because I was always a lazy one. I'm more active as a PPCM'er than prior to dx. I'm more motivated these days to work out.. ya know? Why do they think you have this? I REALLY hope you don't.
