View Full Version : Blood Sugars

I've been feeling pretty crappy lately. I went to the doctors, had some blood work done, and it all came back essentially normal. I feel pretty strong that it's related to my blood sugars. My A1C was 5.4 (normal 0-5.9). A friend of mine had an extra glucomoter so I've been watching some of my sugars. Morning "fasting" averaging 108. About 30 mins after eating (oatmeal, strawberries, hardboiled egg and tea with splenda) its 200-250 (mind you, I'm eating healthier than I have in a long time, as I'm doing Weight Watchers). At this point, is when I start feeling lousy, jittery, lack of concentration, nauseated, etc. It lasts usually until mid afternoon. I've checked my blood sugars randomly through out the day and they have been between 104 and 148. Finally around 4pm things feel like they are leveling off, I'm feeling more "normal" and my sugars are 98-102. I know at one time, 80-120 fasting was considered normal, but I hear that the guide is now to keep it as close to 100 or lower if possible. What's a "normal" variation in blood sugars, with and without regard to meals? I am going to follow up with my doctor but was wondering if anyone has any experience with blood sugars.

I can tell you that mine has skyrocketed since starting all the meds. I never, ever had a problem with sugar. I think my poor liver is just trying to digest everything and can't handle sugar now. Back last fall, my fasting reading was 146 and my Internist freaked. She FINALLY admitted that beta blockers can elevate glucose and triglycerides......but I could hear what she was really saying "Deal with it....your heart's getting better, we'll treat the diabetes". After two more A1C's, with the highest being 6.6, she wanted to start me on Glucophage. I told her that I'd handle it with diet and exercise. Bad decision I'm sure.....but I just couldn't handle anything else. And yes.....she wants to see fasting levels close to 100, and she considers diabetes at 6.00 with an A1C. I've read that the American Diabetes Association rates it at 7.00. I HAVEN'T BEEN BACK TO HER for my follow-ups. And.....I've been drinking lots of sweet tea on these hot, Texas days. I LOVE SWEET TEA !!!! I do know that all of the guidelines have been re-adjusted due to the "obesity" problem in this country and the amount of overweight children that are developing Type 2 so early in life. I'm not sure I answered any of your questions.......but I'm in the same boat girlfriend!

My endocrinologist says fasting should be below 110. 2 hr after meal 140 and 1 hr after meal 180. I am so excited now that I have lost weight with my Gastric Bypass surgery the diabetes is gone. I constantly run in 80's and 90's! Boy can I tell the difference. When I was dx I had a fasting BS 237! A1C 9.4! Wishing you great sugar control!

My doctors strongly believe that blood sugar should be below 100. Anything over 100 causes them to talk about diet exercise and preventing diabetes. It sounds like yours is pretty abnormal. I would definitely see your doctor soon! If my most recent test comes back with over 100 (I once came in at 110), my doctor is recommending that I come in for the glucose test that we all had when pregnant. You know, when we fast, drink the orange kool-aid like stuff and then get measured over a period of 3 hours. That sounds like it might be what you need.

I did return to the doctors and I have the Glucose Tolerance test Scheduled for this Wed. Hopefully it will find something that can be addressed. I do like my doctor. She emailed my cardiologist just to keep her updated on what's going on, just to make sure she isn't missing something that could be heart related or med related. She doesn't think it is, but isn't afraid of asking for a second opinion.
