Dr. Fett,

I have finally had 2 cardio appointments that measured BNP. My first result did not concern me as it 60, but my last one (just last week) was 162. My cardio (a HF specialist) said that they were both normal as the cut-off was 300 for normal healthy adults. When I asked further about the 300 vs 100 cut-off she explained that they test the NTpro-BNP. Is this the same thing that you talk about for BNP or is it the other BNP test?

Thanks,
Twilah

Yes, this is the test we have used in testing for plasma B-type Natriuretic Peptide. We feel that it is a bit more sensitive, but the other tests used are also very acceptable. That is why I have always emphasized to be sure about the "cut-off" levels for the specific test used by each laboratory. In your case, the test used has a higher cut-off, and you are well within the limits of normal, "not-to-worrry" levels. That test kit's producer, Biomedica of MA,USA, lists negative as < 250 fmol/ml, borderline as 250-350, and abnormal >350. So you are just fine. Keep up the good work!
