Hi Dr. Fett,

One of the news stations in our community sponsors a health fair every year and I went to have my blood drawn since I haven't had it done since before my daughter was born and I got some unexpected results I wanted to ask you about...

First... some background information... I am currently 14 months post-partum and post PPCM diagnosis. I was diagnosed with and EF of 35 - 40%... my EF decreased slowly, but is now 50 - 55%. I am currently taking 12.5 mg of Coreg 2x per day and 5 mg Enalapril 1x per day. Prior to becoming pregnant I was on medication for high trigycerides (~ 350 mg/dl) but was taken off before becoming pregnant, overall cholesterol was fine, but HDL's were low. I was also on glucophage while trying to get pregnant and during pregnancy for *suspected* PCOS and insulin resistance (didn't have any trouble getting pregnant and no high blood sugars during preg). I had no known thyroid issues before pregnancy.

My recent test results came back with SKY HIGH trigycerides (963:eek: ), low HDL (27 - not surprised since I haven't been exercising) and high serum cholesterol (263). Also my TSH was 6.56 mu/l (0.40 - 5.5 listed as normal). I have read that Coreg can increase cholesterol and trigycerides and have also read that beta-blockers (although not Coreg) are sometimes used to treat hyperthyroidism... so I was wondering... is it possible that the Coreg has caused the dramatic increase in my triglycerides and could it possibly be depressing my thyroid function slightly? I've also read about post-partum thyroiditis... am I too far out from childbirth for this to be a possibility? Also... would you recommend that I speak to my cardiologist about this first (in light of my PPCM history and meds) or my PCP first?

Thanks so much for your help - I really appreciate it!

I don't think the Coreg is related to either of those problems. If you are diabetic and/or hypothyroid, both of those could throw the cholesterol and triglyceride out of kilter. Yes, check with your cardiologist and your internist. Best regards.
