Hi all,

Spent the entire night in the ER last night for little 13 month old Sarah. She has been feeling warm all week (thought it was teething), we had one of those thermometers that you stick under the arm pit....it never went above 100 so we we're never worried...DON'T USE THOSE!!!!!

Sarah woke up about 10pm last night screaming, I thought she's fallen out of her crib...she threw up and her heart was so fast I could barely calculate it...I finally got a good read and it was 240 bpm and her breathing was real shallow at 60 breaths per minute. We rushed her to the ER and she had a temperature of 104.5 I WAS FREAKING OUT!!!!! (By the way, the armpit thing read 99.4).

The Doc thinks she has phnemonia (sp), it hasn't settled in her lungs yet but, he said that's the last place it goes and that's when it's very SERIOUS!!!!

Being a first time mother and never having experienced this before...can you veteran Mom's that have kids with pnemonia(sp) before enlighten me on what to expect! I've never even had it myself!

Thanks,
Kari

expect lots of antibiotics, and if it settles in her lungs, breathing treatments similar to what they give asthma patients (nebulizer, or little tent thinggy since she's still little).

My children haven't had penumonia, thankfully, but this is how I was treated every time I supposedly had it when it was really CHF.

Sending well wishes. I know she can't be a very happy camper right now.

Unfortunately, I can not give you any advise since Julia or myself have never had it but I wanted to send my wishes for a quick recovery and some patience. I am sure she is not feeling her self and is totally miserable. I will keep her in my prayers that she will be well real soon. Please let us know how she is doing.

The only piece of advice I have is what you yourself have already discovered....a rectal temp is the best temp and the most accurate. So sorry you were not told of this and didn't know what to expect. It is *so* hard when you are a new parent and your little one gets sick for the first time. Hope she is doing better by now and is on the road to recovery. Hang in there !

Holy cow Kari we went through something similar last week, two nights of 104 fever and panting like a dog. The second night a warm bath/motrin would not bring down the fever so we went to the ER and they gave Hannah a shot of antibiotics at the hospital and sent us home with antibiotics. They thought she was getting pneumonia too although the chest x-ray was clear. Also, they told me at the hospital that a lot of times when the fever is high like that they throw up because it upsets their stomach. However, the next morning she woke up 100% fine but with a rash on her trunk - so then I took her to her ped who said it was roseola and to stop the antibiotics and she's been fine ever since.

This first time mom thing is rough! I hope your little one is feeling better soon!

Same thing happened to Mikey 2 weeks ago, Mike insisted on taking the under arm temp and I don't believe that so I took rectal, under arm said 100.5, rectal said 103.5. He was sick witha HIGH fever two days and I called doc they told me to wait, he also threw up two or three times, then he also got the rash and turned out it was roseola as well..

I am so glad you took her to the er and she will be fine, they may put her on a Nebulizer, it is a pain to give sometimes cause they don't like the mask, Mikey had one for awhile when he was a baby they thought he had RSV. You just have to keep a mask over there face and they breath (I think Mikeys was arbuteral maybe) it in for a few minutes a few times a day..

I hope Sarah feels better soon!!!

My oldest (now 9) was hospitalized for RSV when he was 16 months old. It was terrifying. He had been sick all week with a high temp. The final morning it was 104 and he threw up the Tylenol. We took him to the doctor and they admitted him. Though it was scary to have him admitted, I was greatly relieved that he was being followed by professionals. Within 2 days of starting IV antibiotics, he recovered and we went home.

We had been to the Children's Museum a week earlier. I'm sure that he contracted it there. I've been extra germ conscious in public places ever since. I hope she feels better soon!

Will continue to pray for you and your little one. It will be OK. Lots of liquids and rest and of course antibiotics if it is bacterial. Sleep when you can and let her sleep as much as she needs! Just force liquids. No milk or juice! It makes congestion worse! Water is the best or kool aid or the such! Well wishes and prayers sent your way!

Thanks guys for all the advise!!! WOW...everyone has been through this. No juice or milk....I'm glad you told me that...that's what I've been giving her. I'll stop right now and give her water.

Thanks for all the WELL WISHES....Sarah is feeling much better today!

Thanks again!

Love,
Kari

ooooooh yes. I forgot the no juice or milk one. Pedialyte, if Sarah will drink it. None of my kids will touch the stuff. I usually cut a little gatorade with water, and sometimes even luke warm chicken broth, weakened.

And remember, snot is ok until it turns colors. When you start seeing the yellow and green stuff, it's time to have her looked at (not much help this time around - but just in case).

Just a quick add on. If the vomit turns colors, I mean it looks green or yellow and slimy, something else could be going on. As with any sickness atch for a change in symptoms cause anything can turn into something else or she could have a reaction to the meds, since nobody knows what there allergic to until they try it. My daughter willnot take certain flavors or unflavored pedilyte, but she loves cherry pedialyte. Try different flavors. Some kids can't tolerate water when there sick. I have one that can and one that can't. Oh sprite is good to give to or sierra mist.Sheake it up to get the fizz out so it lays better on the stomach.

Coming in later here, I'm sure little Sarah is already feeling better by now. Looks like everyone gave you good advice. Neither one of my boys have ever had pneumonia either, but I know how scary it is when they get sick. About the pedialyte....I usually mix it with 7-up or sprite and they will drink it. Sometimes they even fake being sick, thinking they are going to get some because pop is a big treat for them in our house. They only get it when they are sick, or at a birthday party. Pedialyte also makes a freeze-pop. I don't know if you've heard of these, but they also have cold-pops (suckers made with vitamin C). Just letting you know for the next time she gets sick (hopefully not any time soon).
