View Full Version : When Visiting the Dentist...
Do I remember correctly that when going to the dentist for a cleaning or for other work that I'm supposed to take antibiotics? If so, who prescribes that, my dentist? Before or after the work is done?

GOOD question. My understanding is that antibiotic prophylaxis is only needed when there is valve regurgitation/leakage, but with PPCM I wasn't sure.

You should take prophylactic antibiotics only if your Dr. has specifically identified a valvular problem on your echo. If you are unsure, call your cardio office.
When I was taking them, the dentist prescribed them. There was a note on my chart and they would either call in an Rx the night before OR they actually keep some on hand in the office for you to take.
As Susan said antibiotics are only indicated for those with valve problems, but I would check with both your cardio and dentist as sometimes they panic and want you on it ;)
