The best chance for PPCM research in the USA comes on 21 April 2005, in Bethesda, Maryland. The concept proposal from Maternal Fetal Medicine Units (MFMU) goes to the steering committee of the National Institute of Child Health Development (NICHD), under the umbrella of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). If the concept is approved by the steering committee, a mini-protocol will be presented in July, which if approved, will lead to the full study by at least 14 major medical centers in the USA. This study is overdue. This is the best chance so far to move ahead with definitive studies that will help us put more pieces in the puzzle of PPCM. I am optimistic, but you never know until the study is launched.

Thanks, Dr. Fett. What can we do to help? Do we need to camp out on someone's steps with picket signs? Should we be writing anyone letters at this point?

Thanks, Serena. At this point, hope and pray. I think that NIH experts aren't very swayed by political pressure on a specific point. If this proposal does NOT go through, then appeals can be made to executive and legislative branches of government, for future encouragement. General appeals for "increased research on ppcm" are always in order, especially coming from individuals with personal experience with PPCM.

You heard him, Ladies. General appeals can never hurt.
