I went to my cardio yesterday and she put me on 20mg. Lasix daily. She thinks that i am retaining fluid. I tried to tell her that i just went off South Beach but she said my ankles looked swollen. Is anyone else on a diuretic?

I've been on Lasix since my DX Jan '04. I started out on 20 mg twice a day and am now taking 20mg once a day since my ef has improved. Lots of potty breaks in the beginning.....as I was retaining alot of fluid. The only thing I can really complain about is the dry skin. Make sure to use a good moisturizer.

I take lasix once a month to get rid of the water retention from my period. One dose 20mg does it for me. When I was diagosed I was on it daily for 2 weeks then Sprinalactone (potassium sparing diuretic) until my EF improved. I keep my lasix in case I ever go into failure again because my cardio said just take about 4 and head for the hospital! I did Atkins and I too retained water for about 3 days but I took a lasix on my own. When you come off diets like that your cells react differently to water and the ability to hold it. If you are going to be on it longterm I would ask the doc to give you Sprinalactone instead. As long as your potassium level is normal.

Lauren...my cardiologist has prescribed lasix for me. 80 mg/day. It is extrememly difficult to "fit it in" as most of you know that when you take lasix, you make frequent, unscheduled trips to the bathroom (which I believe helped me get my SS disability, but that is another story). I need a mininum of 3 hours to take my lasix and "get it out of my system". If I have a morning appt or something to do with the kids I don't take it and after a day or two, I know that I HAVE to stay home and take it, not plan anything and just "hang out" at home. I have also learned to "judge" when I need more lasix and when I don't. Its all about balance. I cannot give up living my life because I had to stay home because I took my lasix. Am I making any sense here? Some of us need it, some don't.

Lauren,
I am on Lasix once a day and Spironolactone. Have been on lasix since DX. No problems here and my body got used to it so I don't have to pee as much. I am on a low dose though.

I take lasix as needed - usually just around my period or when I eat too much salt. It really washes me out even though I take it with the potassium pills. I've learned to also drink a glass of OJ with it and that helps some.
