When you are in HF is the dry cough from fluid in your lungs? When I got the cough/tickle all the time it was when I couldn't breath at all..
Does the cough always come with shortness of breath or could you just get the dry cough even without the breath shortness and other HF symptoms?
Thanks

You can definitely get a hacking dry cough due to allergies or anything. My HF cough was moist and non productive. I got the dry cough when I started my Ace for a while. Then it only lasted 3 weeks and my cardiologist told me if I could hang on for a couple of weeks it would go away and that I could remain on the Ace which was best suited for the Coreg. Speaking of Coreg I gotta go take mine. ;)

Thanks Melissa
I have this annoying dry cough and I think it is Allergies but my LAST horrible symptom before I almost died of HF was the cough so of course it freaks me out, LOL!
My allergies must be acting up really bad this season as other years I never even had much noticable and this year I feel horrible my eyes are all watery, my nose is all stuffed and my throat is all scratchy.. it STINKS!

That definitely sounds like an allergy cough for sure now that you told me all of the symptoms. No worries! I was told not to worry unless there is swelling and you can't lay flat on your back without a MOISt Cough. M

To make it even more fun to figure out, ACE inhibitors can cause an annoying and dry tickly cough as one of the main side effects.

For some reason, 8.5 years later whenever I get a cough- it always makes me think of the horrible cough I had with chf. I know that's it's a cold or allergies, but just for a second it takes me back there. Coughing is the only thing that does that, I hate it!

Thanks for reminding me to take my medicine. I just realized I didn't take it this morning. I can get nasty withdrawal symptoms if I don't take my Paxil

Weirdness...I had a bad chest cold (the LAST thing a person recently diagnosed with CHF wants to go through  ) and it took about two weeks to get rid of the productive cough. I made a call to my cardio during that time because I thought I was having heart failure again (nope, just a cold).
In the middle of that time, I changed ACE inhibitors. For the last two weeks, I've had a scratchy thing that makes me cough periodically. Sometimes it's productive, but more often, not. I've been taking Claritin because I thought it might be allergies, since it seems crazy that a cold could continue this long. Now I'm wondering if it's the new ACE....I guess I'll just have to wait and see if it goes away on the Claritin or not. If it's allergies, they've never been this bad for me.

It really could be the ACE. I tried two before going to an ARB which has no cough side effect. They say the ACE cough can go away after 3 months or so, but it was too bothersome to me to wait. I am doing great on the ARB now.

Glad I am not the only one with a bad cough right now. Mine is Allergies I know that but in the back of my mind I start thinking CHF.I test my breathing to make sure I can breath in well everyday. When I was starting HF I would cough every time I tried to breath in deep, kind of like an ongoing Asthma Attack.
ACE made me cough so much when I was on it I would take to much Lasix due to the fear of HF.
One thing that has helped my Allergy cough is Zyrtec and Benadryl.
