A nice guideline to the use of Natriuretic Peptide (BNP or pro-BNP or B-type NP) testing in heart failure or monitoring those with previous heart failure can be found from the Mass Gen Hospital professor (Januzzi) published in Cleveland Clinic Journal of Medicine 2006;73:149-57. In that article the average cost per test is listed at $20 (not very expensive compared to an echo). I personally think this test has a role in monitoring PPCM patients who have a subsequent pregnancy.

What are the normal values for this test in the "units" that it is measured? My doc just says they are normal. I have had a result of 49 and 65. I just know the doc says No Heartfailure and that is all I needed to know. He feels that as a nurse I should just submit to his reign and not question. I am not trying to question just learn. Will you help?

There are several different tests, and the "cut-off" (the critical level at which CHF is more likely) values and units used are different for each test and lab. For the article I cited, the test used is NT-proBNP and the cut-off value is 450 pg/ml for persons under age 50. Your doctor's office or reference laboratory used should be able to tell you the test used, the units of measurement, and the cut-off value. I see no harm in your being totally informed about type of test, units used, normal values, and cut-off values.
